How work life balance affects employee performance

Work-life balance is a term that’s been frequently used in the workplace for many years, and this buzzword shows no signs of dying down soon. Someone who is able to maintain this delicate balance is less likely to suffer from burnout, thus maximising their chances of remaining consistently productive. At the same time, they are less susceptible to feeling the negative effects of work stress, which is often the precursor to some of the most common health-related issues in the workplace, such as hypertension, chronic pain, and digestive problems.

Read on to learn more about how maintaining a good work-life balance can positively impact overall productivity in the office:

Less Stress and Burnout

As mentioned earlier, stress and burnout can negatively affect a person’s physical and mental health. Increased stress levels can harm a person’s productivity, as too much negative pressure can cause an employee to lose focus and require more resources to complete their tasks according to the standard that the company has set for them. Over time, the inability to live up to expectations can cause the employee to resent their responsibilities and find less satisfaction in the work they do.

Companies can help their employees manage their time and stress levels well by introducing productivity tools in the workplace. Programs that are designed to help with time and project management, like Microsoft Project and a wide range of Google Apps, can empower employees to focus on their tasks, stay on top of their responsibilities, and finish their work within the time given to them. This can help reduce overtime work, meaning employees can leave their tasks at their desk and focus on their loved ones once their office hours are over.

Improved Motivation

People who can dedicate equal levels of time and energy to their career and personal endeavours feel more refreshed when they come to the office or report for work. They don’t feel like work is taking away time from their loved ones or hobbies, so they’re more willing to take on additional tasks in the office. Having this positive attitude will encourage their colleagues to step up as well, and this can bring up the team’s overall productivity level.

To prevent work and personal time from overlapping, it’s a good idea to have protocols for after-hours business communication. For example, determine which calls or messages are deemed emergencies and should be responded to immediately, and which situations can wait until the next working day. It would also be a good idea to encourage employees to take personal leaves and sick leaves if they need to.

Better Workplace Culture

Highly motivated employees can do wonders for office morale and workplace culture. It’s easy for other employees to catch the bug and also adopt a more positive outlook when it comes to their jobs. Imagine if the work environment, as a whole, encourages people to pay as much attention to their personal lives as they do to the progression of their career. Most of the employees, then, can devote their full attention to their jobs because they know their working hours will not compete with their personal time. Without being burdened by excessive work-related stress, they can aim to accomplish better things and ensure that they’re submitting quality output on time.

How Different Generations Perceive Work-Life Balance

The importance of work-life balance changes from time to time. For many people born between 1945 and 1960—the Baby Boomers—work-life balance isn’t a particularly important concern. Born after World War II, what’s important to this generation is that they have stable employment. Gen Xers or those that are born between 1961 and 1980 witnessed how much time and energy their parents devoted to their jobs. For them, a good place of employment provides them with the opportunity to work as well as build relationships with their loved ones.

Millennials, which now make up the biggest portion of the labour force, have a different view on the matter. For many people who were born between 1981 and 2000, the work that they have right now serves to support the lifestyle that they want to lead. Much like the generations before them, it’s certain that members of Gen Z will have a different view on how they can balance their responsibilities at home and in the workplace. When their time comes, they need to work hand-in-hand with their respective companies to achieve an environment where they can work on their careers while cultivating personal pursuits.

For many people and companies, work-life balance is an important component of a healthy workplace. Contented employees, for one, are less likely to leave their place of work. For another, having a healthy workplace also helps improve employee productivity. For these reasons, many companies strive to provide their employees with an environment that will allow them to achieve work-life balance. Will your company follow suit?
